Three Preludes
for organ

Three Preludes (1996) was commissioned by Delbert Disselhorst, organ professor at the University of Iowa, in honor of Lola Wolf for the dedication of her new Pasi pipe organ on August 5, 1996.

By matching the letters of Lola's name to Roman Numerals (L, W=V+V), I came to generate much of the material around the number 5. For instance, the pitches are derived from a 10-note scale which replicate themselves at the interval of a 5th, and much of the rhythmic, metric and isorhythmic organizations are built also on the number 5. The first movement is in the spirit of a chorale prelude, the second is a quick tocatta in 5/8, and the third is set as a chorale.
