Outside Cage
for piano and electronics

|
This work is a companion piece to Inside Cage (2005) written for the same preparation found in John Cage's
Sonatas and Interludes (1946-8). While Inside Cage is performed solely on a prepared piano, Outside Cage
places the prepared piano part 'inside' the tape part, allowing the pianist (and the audience) to stand outside,
looking in. While there are references to Inside Cage - a complex matrix to generate all pitch and rhythmic
materials - Outside Cage's music corresponds to those strings not prepared, i.e. sounds based upon open
not muted sonorities. As in a zoo, we become oblivious to anything caged up - we peer in, but not for long.
The animals inside, with seeming yearning, also peer out, but not for long. Over time, connections are severed,
without repair, mysterious and impenetrable.
